Become a Sea Against Imperialism

Given the centrality of the sea to the work of colonisation and empire, I love this Turkish graffito my friend Pascal photographed in Istanbul:

The sea is against imperialism

Update: Pascal’s friend says this Deniz is Deniz Gezmiz… Good pun, in that case!

  1. A. Degen says:

“To be a sea” in modern Turkish is often used with reference to Nazım Hikmet’s poem “Bulut Mu Olsam” (“Should I Be A Cloud”), where he is thought to be alluding to Deniz Gezmiş in the final line, even though Deniz Gezmiş was not a known political figure at the time the poem was written.
